According to the 1911 Census Alexander Seggie was born in Dublin in 1893. In 1911 he was living at 28 Princes Street, Tonbridge Wells, Kent with his mother and father Janet & William and a younger brother Thomas.

Alexander Seggie was commissioned in May 1915 as a Second Lieutenant on Probation [Supplement to London Gazette of 14 May 1915] and posted to the Depot and 3rd Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers then at Buncrana. He was appointed to an Active Service appointment with the Royal Irish Fusiliers with 8 other Second Lieutenants with effect 20 Jan 1916. A full account of the attack by 9th Royal Irish Fusiliers on 1st July 1916 may be found at www.webmatters.net/txtpat/index.php?id=77 Suffice to say that 9 RIF went over the top of their parapet in four waves between 07.10hrs and 07.30hrs to get into a feature in no-mans-land called the Ravine, within 150 yards of the German line, before the artillery lifted at 07.30hrs (Zero). However the German machine-gunners had located the gaps cut in the wire through which the Fusiliers had to approach their objectives. Of 33 officers and just over 600 other ranks of 9 RIF who attacked, 215 All Ranks were Killed or posted Missing and 303 were Wounded. 2Lt Alexander Seggie was one of the Missing - his remains were only later recovered from the battlefield.//

His birth was registered in Dublin North in the Jul-Sep Quarter of 1892.

The DIA says the fusiliers memorial id by Kathleen Shaw, 1906.

The Carberry memorial is at Findagrave, and a clearer pic says the sculptor is named TH Denanny (1901 census link)

I can't say the handbill is successful in its effort to denigrate the council: one statue stands to this day in a prominent place in a public park, the other is in a graveyard.

Should, I believe, read: 11th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles (South Antrim Volunteers), part of 108th Brigade, 36th Ulster Division, which on 1st July 1916 attacked the German 99th Reserve Battalion near Thiepval in the South Ancre Sector.

The evacuation of the wounded Captain Charles Craig, MP for South Antrim, to medical attention in a wheelbarrow by the Germans is recounted in 'The First Day on the Somme' by Martin Middlebrook.//
