    There's a lot to be said for optimism, but for crying out loud, even the slowest person on the planet would have figured that these were nigh on impossible objectives after sitting in trenches for 1.5 years. There are historians trying to convince us that the Allied generals really weren't callous, unthinking men and that they really did value the life of their troops. Really? With plans like these??!
