Other Bain/LOC photos of the Democratic U. S. Congressmen visiting New Jersey Governor Woodrow Wilson, at the New Jersey resort town of Sea Girt, at the time of Wilson's nomination as the Democratic candidate for President in the election of 1912:

Clearly a summer event that appealed to the young. I wondered if it could be the 1912 Olympic parade (as in www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2163157759/ where boaters are also in evidence), but the route according to NYT, August 25, 1912 query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9403E2DB113AE633A... led down 5th Ave from 41st Street to Waverley Place, where a turn was made across to Broadway and thence to City Hall. This route does not go through Union Square.

These boys were spectators at a Democratic political rally in Union Square, New York City, on August 20, 1912. The rally was conducted by feminists and women's rights advocates who were supporters of the Democratic candidates for President and Vice President of the United States: Woodrow Wilson and Thomas R. Marshall. At one point in her presentation, Mrs. Daisy Harriman began tossing pinback campaign buttons into the crowd of young men, who surged forward, avid for souvenirs. Notice how several of them are holding their hats upside down, hoping to catch fragments of Mrs. Harriman's largesse. The upshot was that police had to be called in to calm the crowd.
