Early on there existed a number of organisations catering to the German population in Queensland, which in 1871 had reached 6,000. One of the prominent groups was the Germania Club, which met in the Globe Hotel in Adelaide Street and later in the Plough Inn in Stanley Street. In May 1883 members of the club formed the Deutscher Turn-Verein (German Gymnastics Club). In 1887 the club celebrated the opening of their first club building on Manning Street. Sadly, the building was destroyed by fire in 1889. A second clubhouse, the Turnhalle (gymnastics hall), opened in May 1890. Source: commissariatstore.org.au/the-origins-of-the-german-club/

'' The schools ambition never matched its budget, and by 1779 as the main block neared completion, it was designed not to proceed with a large quadrangle to the rear. Ivory resigned from the project in disgust. His graceful tower was never completed beyound a stub which was eventually removed in 1894 and the dome we see today constructed to cap the base.''
