Lovely old picture, thank you. Is the Turbinia still on show in two pieces?

No Turbinia was restored to her former glory, after a fund was launched - jointly sponsored by the North East Coast Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders and Newcastle Corporation. Thanks to the corporations above and other Institutions and subscribers, Turbinia was restored (as nearly as possible) to her original condition and housed in an annexe at the Science and Engineering Museum in Newcastle. This was officially opened by Admiral Sir Casper John, First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, on September 15th, 1961. Turbinia was then moved in 1994 to her new home, Discovery Museum, where people lined the streets to watch the journey through the City of Newcastle. Thank you TWAM, it's lovely to see information like this about my old part of England. I come from Chester-le-Street but have lived for the last nearly forty years here in New Zealand. I'm very glad that this site and TWAM have met.

The pic that appears here looks to have been taken somewhat earlier than the Kerry & Co pic... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/163987030 - Sydney Mail, 20th April, 1904...pic of the building under construction... trove.nla.gov.au/work/170931051 - an earlier Kerry & Co view... trove.nla.gov.au/work/188533262 - this NLA Fairfax pic shows a similar view...but in ca. early 1923...it shows the Union Bank (SE corner Pitt/Hunter Sts) post 1908 rebuild...with the additional storey and cupola, etc. It also shows the Empire Hotel being mutilated to become the Queensland National Bank...the traffic island garden in Bent St is also well established... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/164358254 - Sydney Mail, 2nd June, 1888...sketch of the Union Bank Building drawn prior to its construction... A key to the date here might be the work we see at the bottom left of frame...I suspect this is the construction of the garden plot that occupied the Bent/Young St traffic island, near the Metropole Hotel...but so far I haven't managed to find any reference to the construction of this garden in the digitised newspapers...
