Well, these were "news" photos, so the photos were taken by photo journalists who understood the importance of documentation.

Joe Mandot was a Los Angeles-based featherweight boxer in the 1910s and 1920s: www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=229207 &cat=boxer There are at least two other photos of Mandot in the collection so far.
