    Figures sitting on top of the bales have been removed from the negative to create a clear skyline above the bales. The lower halves of their bodies can still be seen Could be worthwhile having a good look at the glass plate negative for this one.

The pic was taken outside Winchcombe Carson's wool store and warehouse in Wattle St, Pyrmont...per the accompanying article the pic was taken on 21st December, 1897, when Sydney carrier J.J. Gilham transported the load seen here from Pyrmont to Moore's Wharf, at Millers Point... The pic was reproduced in several Australian newspapers over the years...but this appears to have been the first publication...

    I think its onions for sure and they are taking off the outer husks/skins with that machine. Doing it right out there in the field, that must have been way before a factory.

    The bag clinches it for me: onions are more often in mesh bag such as seems to be the case here
