This is right across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral in Norwich. When I was in school there in the late 70's-late 80's, we would have recess in that park when the church parking lot was filled during the day when a major mass or funeral was taking place.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure if you stood on this same corner today, it would look exactly the same. Norwich doesn't change much.

I live just down Union St and walk around this park almost everyday. The building in the background (center-right) with the tower is painted a different color now, and the iron fence around the park is now a dark green, but most everything else is the same. The trees are taller now, and we can't burn leaves anymore.

We had another "W. R. & S.", William Ritchie & Sons Edinburgh, a while back. 1903 + (?)

The streetights look to be all gas, which would suggest the early part of that date range.

Never been to Banbridge before. Physically or otherwise. The "cut" is intriguing. Looking at it, I'd have assumed it had something to rail or tram traffic - but seemingly it was completed in the 1830s to improve (mainly horse-drawn) through traffic on the Dublin road. As Wikipedia puts it, to prevent horses from falling "faint before reaching the top of the hill". One wonders if the overloaded carts had as much to do with it though :)

Heading to Lennon Wylie for street directories: 1901: No Murphy Temperance Hotel. There is a Sloan and Gilmore cycle repair given as Newry St. 1907: A Miss Murphy on Eden St, Sloan, cycle repairer, Newry Street (Gilmore has opened his own cycle repair shop on Bridge St). 1910: Sloan, cycle repairer, Church square, Murphy, Miss, confectioner and lodgings, Newry street So, I think we are between 1907 (Sloan alone but no Murphy on newry St) and 1910 (Sloan away to Church sq).

In 1942 Ohio State Route 74 ran from Cincinnati Eastward toward Batavia. Mount Gilead is North of Columbus.

A map of Ohio from 1942 showing State Route 74 can be found here. Route 74 seems to end around Peebles, OH. Mt Gilead is on the 1942 map in its present location and does not appear to have Route 74 going through it.

I could be wrong, but I think this picture would have to have been taken between Cincinnati and Peebles if it was taken along Route 74 in Ohio in 1942 or 1943.

In 1962 Ohio Route 74 was rename Ohio Route 32 when Interstate 74 was built. There are several sections in Cincinnati still called "Old State Route 74"

Nice information, some of it I did not know. I live close to and travel on Old 74 everyday. It runs through the Glen Este, Sommerville and Mt Carmel area out towards Batavia.

My Dad never ever got use to calling St Rt 32 any thing but St Rt 74.
I could be wrong but I think Gov. Rhodes was the one who changed it to 32 from 74 when it was redone.

It was also initially identified as being taken in Mt Gilead, but looks like it was later identified as being taken in Lincoln, Nebraska.
