Art Smith (1890-1926) was a pioneer aviator. Aerial Age Weekly refers to demonstration flights he made in Japan in 1916, and the article also mentions Yukiteru Ozaki, son of the Minister of Justice in Japan, a member of the Imperial Aero association and a promising young aviator, so this is likely him. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Smith_(pilot) books.google.com/books?id=FNRLAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA507&l... Ozaki (1888-1964) went on to hold political office and become chairman of Japan Airlines and Honkyu Airlines. books.google.com/books?id=QjS03oqmcFwC&pg=PA129&l...

Art Siegel Thanks so much for these citations!

He was considered to be the most daring American aviator, see e.g. The day book., July 29, 1915, NOON EDITION, Image 11 (with a photo of obviously the same plane). On his tour in Japan he was amazingly not only in danger of crashing, but also of being stoned by an angry mob (Honolulu star-bulletin., May 18, 1916, 3:30 Edition, SPORTS CLASSIFIED AND SHIPPING SECTION, Page THIRTEEN, col. 3, "JAPANESE PRESS HEARS ART SMITH NEAR TO DEATH".

According to www.gettyimages.com, Ozaki is Yukio Ozaki, the 2nd Mayor of Tokyo, which would be this man: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yukio_Ozaki. The man on the photo seems to be younger, though.

What a great looking wee car!

Aviator Art Smith in a Harley-Davidson Baby Cup race car built for board racing by Maggini & Perkins at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) in San Francisco. "Maggini" was Al Maggini and "Perkins" was famed motorcyclist Dudley Perkins (Dud Perkins). See www.jstokstad.com/Legends/Motorcycle.com/Photo_Gallery/so... and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dudley_Perkins_(motorcyclist) Here is another photo of Smith in the same car:
