I am sidetracked by Colonel A Spain though, particularly as my first thought was that the man second from right holding the programme, was him instead. This photo in particular looks like him. This photo also looks like him, more so than the man to the left. Plus this album is also interesting. See photo 12, caption says '[Colonel Bruxner, Judge Alfred Paxton Backhouse, the Captain and Colonel A.Spain and party at the Anniversary Regatta, 1937]'. Judge Backhouse is third from left in bowler hat, Colonel Bruxner is second from left, the Captain centre and then Colonel A Spain second from right. Regarding it being a regatta flagship, we thought so too, not just because of the presence of VIPs, but because of the flags in the background. By the way, great spotting in terms of the programme!

It's interesting also in the pic you linked to, do you think the man to his left looks a bit like the man we thought was Spain in our pic? I think that probably the case re the yachties! :)

The Pamir was a German built and owned ship (F. Laeisz shipping line) until the end of WW1 when it was handed over to Italyas reparations. F. Laeisz bought it back in 1924. The Finns bought it in 1931 and used it as an Australian wheat transport vessel. It was seized by the NZ Government as a prize of war during WW2. It had a very checkered career - see here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pamir_(ship).

Corinneski It is indeed, thank you for making that correction Corinneski. It was kind of like the ships of the Sterling Line, they also ran into difficulties. The poor old sailing ships rarely did well in the trade.
