This is brilliant, apart from the wonderful clarity and quality of this photograph there is so much to admire here! The timing of the shot is superb, look at the splash of the "catch" at the end loom of each oar. look at the timing between each boat, look at the structure of the boats, ideal for carrying loads. They must have been a nightmare to move about.

Swordscookie Have been wondering about the flat thing across the top of the turf in the second boat. To hold the turf in place, or a ladder?

National Library of Ireland on The Commons I was looking at it and thought that it might be an unstepped mast but when you look at it more closely it appears to be connected to the tiller at the stern of the boat. It is a very unwieldly tiller (steering mechanism) handle if that is the case. Looking at that in original size and not on my laptop it appears that there is a woman on the stroke oar with the man in the boat nearest the camera.

Swordscookie Certainly looks as if she's playing her part in the rowing.
