The Burkes of Vine Cottage

    For what it's worth, there was a Vine Cottage in Tabot St, Tramore, a guest house in the 1860s - 1880s, run by Mrs Duggan. The Waterford Mirror and Tramore Visitor would list all hotels and guest houses every week with who was staying there.

    No sign of the right Burkes in the census, though.

    There was also a Vine Cottage in Piltown, address of Miss Stephenson, who won £1 for the best kept cottage of people with no children, at the Iverk Farming Society's annual show (Waterford Standard - Saturday 18 September 1909).

    A few Burkes in the 1911 census in Piltown, but the people in the photo are a better match for the Stephensons of Piltown. (2 parents in their 70s, 2 daughters and a son) www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?searchM...

    The road looks very narrow in the Poole shot, needing a circle further down for turning the delivery vans around. Certainly no car ownership was even considered by the developers. The grass verge each side had later to be removed to increase the road width as can be seen in streetview. It could be a carbon copy of many other housing estates in the country and shows the level of design we had and still do.

    James Butler of 30, Rathfadden Villas was a basket-maker who advertised his services in the Waterford Standard. The earliest I found was on 3rd August 1929. The advert says he used the St Dunstan's method for basket-making and wicker-work.
