The caption is very interesting. and factual in that the women do not have seats. However as I've done a ton of ironing myself and seen it done in a modern industrial setting - I doubt that having a seat would actually have been beneficial. Being seated would have required awkward reaching and stretching thus creating additional strain on the women's backs. Being seated would also have required lifting the clothing items at arms length rather than close to their bodies, again causing shoulder strain. In my opinion being seated would have been worse for their general muscular well being.

I was thinking the same thing about it being easier to stand while ironing. It's interesting that's what the staff at the Women's Bureau noted, though. - Jill (National Archives)
