    Hi cardwellpics, 'Chippers' refer to the workers using the rivet guns, not the actual guns. So, in fact, these three women appear to be real life Rosie the Riveters. Thanks for the question!

    A chipper must be something other than a riveter - a rivet usually (if not always) goes at 90 degrees to the surface it's going through. These women are holding the tools at a 20-40 degree angle, and a view of the original size will show debris all around them, and in the foreground a bit of curled up steel, and the ends of the tools clearly look like chisels... They must be cleaning up previous assembly process - welding? It's worth looking at this image at the original size. More details really bring this to life - the looks on the men's faces around the women for instance. it can put your imagination to work trying to figure out who these ladies are, and what it must have been like to be in their shoes.
