Took me a while before I realised I was at the top of 'The Hill'.

Area known as Big Lamp

Could this have been taken from the flats known as "Todds Nook"?

Note the trolley bus wires. It took some skill by the trolley bus driver to negotiate this junction of Elswick Road and Westgate Road. A slight misjudgement and the trolley would become "de-wired"

Newcastle City Library flkr phtostream states this was taken in July 1884 on Westgate Road, who is right?

Johnson Hedley (1851-1913) was the younger brother of Tyneside artist and woodcarver Ralph Hedley (1848-1913), . Johnson was also an artist, as well as a confectionary wholesaler and retailer, and he specialised in landscape paintings.

That looks like the Douglas Hotel just prior to demolition. The shot has been taken from beside what was TSB on Clayton Street and Westgate Road crosses the picture just in front of the hotel.

Grainger Street at junction with Westgate Road.

I don't know why I typed Clayton St when I meant Grainger St.
