The matron is sitting at her desk at the back of the room in front of boxes of medical equipment. V.A.D. stands for Voluntary Aid Detachment. This station is incredibly clean and well organised. It was often the case with these photographs for propaganda that they were posed and pre-organised for optimum effect on morale.
