I believe this was taken on 35th Street NW at M Street in Georgetown (looking North). The buildings at the very top of the hill are gone now but those shown in the middle section line up with what is currently there. goo.gl/maps/8APwwCTZ4RcwbhGh6

I wonder if this is the nude model that was in so many photos around the turn of the century? She is very famous, but as far as I know, nobody knows who she is. I always thought solving her identity would be a fabulous project for forensic investigators and artists. I wish History Channel or someone else would take up that cause. Photos of her were not pornographic. They were tasteful and artful. She had light eyes and baby teeth.This looks a lot like her to me. Does anyone else know the person I am speaking of? Photos of her are widely distributed. She was very pretty. I would love to know if this is her. I painted a picture based on one of her photos. I usually recognize her. But the "baby teeth" effect might be from somebody altering her teeth. It looks like someone tried to darken her lip line. Too bad the photo has been messed with.

Wow, if you look at the larger size it seems the whole dress might be painted on--possibly the headgear too, although maybe that's just been altered.

Often pictures were tainted or coloured for postcards. This is perhaps such kind of painting ? Same thing for teeth. Interesting picture.

Wow I didn't know that, thanks BC. Martin Place figuratively speaking no doubt, as it remained a street for quite a while more?

Highranger This is more complicated than I imagined. The road between George and Pitt Streets was known as "St Martin's Lane"; and "Moore Street" between Pitt and Castlereagh Streets (see 1880 map) "St Martin's Lane" became "Martin Place" and "Moore Street" stayed (see 1895 map). I am not yet sure when the whole street became known as Martin Place, maybe not until the 1920s when it was knocked right through to Macquarie Street. How very confusing!
