Coach Yost (LOC)

    Fielding Harris Yost (1871–1946) was an American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. "After four single-season stints at Ohio Wesleyan, Nebraska, Kansas, Stanford and San Jose State (as interim coach), Yost was hired in 1901 as the head football coach for the Michigan Wolverines football team (1901–1923, 1925–1926), compiling a career college football record of 198–35–12. "During his 25 seasons as the head football coach in Ann Arbor, Yost's Michigan Wolverines won six national championships, captured ten Big Ten Conference titles, and amassed a record of 165–29–10. "Yost invented the position of linebacker, co-created the first ever bowl game, the 1902 Rose Bowl, with then legendary UM athletic director Charles Baird, invented the fieldhouse concept that bears his name, and supervised the building of the first on-campus building dedicated to intramural sports" — compiled Wikipedia                                                    ———————   In 1908, William P. "Big Bill" Edmunds was a student under Coach Yost at Michigan for the first few weeks of the early practice season. [1]   It would appear that the above photograph was taken during this short time. Edmunds later became Head Football Coach at Washington University in St. Louis from 1913-1916. On November 4, 1916, Washington University, coached by Bill Edmunds, played Michigan at Ann Arbor -- coached by Yost. Michigan edged out Washington in that game 66-7. [2]

    Yost is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, here in Ann Arbor. Don't know about Edmunds. Phil Dokas will post photos of Yost's gravestone(s) below:

    This photo appears to gave been taken about a month before George Sisler's major league debut with the St. Louis Browns, on June 28, 1915. Mr. Sisler set the Major League Baseball record for most hits in a season, 257, in 1920, a record that stood until 2004.
