Plotz, a bacteriologist at Mount Sinai Hospital, developed a typhus vaccine that was widely used during WWI.

A photo in similar attire was featured in the NYT pictorial section of May 2, 1915, page 8 memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/np_item.pl?collection=sgproto&... or memory.loc.gov/service/sgp/sgpnyt/1915/191505/19150502/00... Caption says he had recently announced the discovery of the bacillus and vaccine to the New York Pathological Society.

Another copy, at archive.org/stream/etiologyoftyphus00plotrich#page/n1/mod... indicates that "The etiology of typhus exanthematicus" was first published in July 1915 in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. Authors were Harry Plotz, George Baehr, and Peter K. Olitsky.
