Dobbs & Edwards (LOC)

    The Dobbs in this photo must be Robert "Bobby" Dobbs (1869-1930), an American lightweight who, after a long and highly successful boxing career in the United States, went to Europe in 1902 and racked up a considerable number of victories on the continent and in the UK over the next dozen years. Bout list at BoxRec. Thumbnail biography at Cyber Boxing Zone which says that after retiring from the ring he ran a gym and training facilities for boxers. Here's another Bain photo of Dobbs, probably taken about the time of his July, 1910 bout with Danish boxer Holger Hansen. I can't identify with any certainty the Edwards in the photo above, but Dobbs did twice fight a boxer who went by the name Australian Billy Edwards, in Cardiff, Wales, but both of those bouts took place in 1905- perhaps the wrong period for this Bain photo. Another possibility is that the Edwards in this photo is one of the younger boxers Dobbs worked with after his retirement. If so, then it might be the best-known boxer named Edwards during that period, Artie Edwards, whose ring career ran from 1911-1922. Unfortunately, I can't find photos of either Edwards on the Internet.

The NYT spells their name "Suter" consistently. And that's the spelling on sports123.com/tcy/mw-sta.html and www.cyclingnews.com/road.php?id=road/2004/may04/hainleite04 too.

    swanq: Thanks for citing the sources that suggest the brothers' last name is misspelled in our description. It looks as though there was some uncertainty as to spelling at the Bain News Service when they made multiple tries at writing the identification on the negative! We'll alter the spelling in the description we maintain locally and reload it.
