Gateshead Metro Station

It's amazing to see the different shape of the tunnels here, as opposed to those under Newcastle city centre, which were the proper round shape. No doubt this unusual shape was partly due to the ground conditions, with old mineworkings.

Gateshead Station was a difficult one. Old coal mine workings hindered progress and at one point a pour of concrete was lost as it dropped into a passage below! As Robert says - the tunnel will be to suit the ground conditions at that location.

Looking towards Newcastle City Centre from Jesmond, 1978

So much to the city that I've never seen. . Interesting to see the route to Haymarket that the Metro takes - a large 'S' bend for sure.

Such a shame that so much of historic Jesmond was destroyed by the Central Motorway (east) construction. Blights the whole area as this shot shows so well.

Haymarket Metro Station escalator shaft

People fail to realise that all of this concrete and ironwork is still there but behind the lovely clean bright facade surrounding the escalators.
