I think this is looking east near the Ward Avenue intersection. Cable trams ran between 1894 and 1905 from King Street wharf to Ocean Street Edgecliff. On Bayswater Road the trams were city bound only, hence only one set of tracks in this photo. More info: www.cable-car-guy.com/html/ccoznz.html#syd One of this line's trailing cars is in the Powerhouse Museum: www.powerhousemuseum.com/collection/database/?irn=207898&...

I think I have this the wrong way round - the tram is travelling away from us on an "outbound" trip. The "inbound" was via Upper William Street South.

That is a 'Trailing Car' with the 'Dummy' in front, exactly as the preserved cable tram car in the Powerhouse Museum - www.powerhousemuseum.com/collection/database/?irn=207898 I recently found this 1895 Sydney map (interactive) which clearly shows the odd loop at Bayswater Road. This photo was taken about where the "Y" in Bayswater is. www.nla.gov.au/apps/cdview?pi=nla.map-rm3443-sd&rgn=0...
