Charles Musgrove was a Very Naughty Boy. Also charged in 1893 for "carnally knowing his daughter, Emily Musgrove, a girl over ten and under sixteen years of age." Read All About It - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/62178876

This is one prison I have been to. It's a wonderful place, and recommended. I don't think this building is still there - it looks as if it was the Governor's house outside the walls, and the children might be his (?). Lack of a garden and footpath implies it was newly built. There is a doppelganger print in the same series - investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/asp/photosearch/photo.asp... . Most of the photos of Trial Bay in Photo Investigator have doubles for some reason. I think they are all (in the 4481 series) contemporary with the new gaol just nearing completion and about to open in 1886 www.migrationheritage.nsw.gov.au/exhibitions/zivillager/h... .

Here is an excerpt: "...Trial Bay had been recognised as a safe shipping refuge from southerlies ever since its naming after the wreck of the Brig Trial in 1817. In the 19th century, coastal shipping was the main means of transport. Between 1863 and 1866 some 90 ships and 243 lives were lost, forcing the NSW Colonial government to act. In 1870 Parliament voted 10,000 pounds towards the construction of a breakwater to form a “harbour of safe refuge” at Trial Bay. ...The Trial Bay Gaol was established in 1876 as an experimental Public Works Gaol where the inmates would construct the breakwater...not completed until 1886..."

The Heavy Cruiser looks like either HMAS Canberra or HMAS Australia.

The Kalang and Koondooloo were made obsolete as car ferries, following the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932, and eventually converted to Harbour Showboats, immediately popular with the public , Kalang later renamed the 'Sydney Queen'.
