Rice was a staple in the East Indian Diet. My grandmother cultivated a small field at the back of the house in Barrackpore -Princes Town which the family used to cultivate and sell at the local markets in south Trinidad (Barrackpore. The rice would be cut by hand with very little implements (eg. scythe -we still had one up till last year at home.) by all members of the family. It was spread out on mats under a shed. Sadly, nowadays the rice industry is confined to a few districts and T&T relies on Guyana to supply its rice demands. Comment by member of Nationals at Trinidad High Commission London.

Actually, this area is known as the Inner Careenage, separated from the Outer Carenage by a Swing Bridge, which was subsequently replaced by a modern lift bridge.
