    Audience comments from the Caribbean Photographic Memories session, Leeds West Indian Centre, October 2013 Discussion that this was the type of school remembered by Carl Hylton who went to school in Jamaica during the early 1950s and used a slate and chalk as a writing book. Some audience members concurred with this statement. We also noted that some of the children were barefooted and it was emphasised that for some people even in the 1950s shoes were not worn at all times. The original caption ‘Native schools in Jamaica’ was discussed – with the use of ‘native’ or ‘backwardness’, not quite linking with the packed classroom and the quest for academic knowledge.
