Audience comments from the Caribbean Photographic Memories session, Leeds West Indian Centre, October 2013: Original caption – spells ‘Mawby’. The Mauby woman serving Mauby drink from a pail carried on the top of her head. Carl Hylton commented on her African appearance balancing the container on her head. Carl had received a plastic bottle of Mauby drink and showed the audience. Mauby is a bitter sweet drink with medical properties and you can buy the bark on the web. Another woman in the audience added that the bark can also be bought in London. Other audience members indicated that the Mauby drink is well known in other parts of the Caribbean, including Guyana and Jamaica. In Guyana it is especially popular at Christmas time. No one had any personal memories of seeing a Mauby woman like the one in the photograph, but several remembered consuming the drink, or watching their mothers prepare it from the bark. One person (Grace Inniss) had just returned from a short holiday back to Barbados – her home island – and had drunk a lot of Mauby during her stay.
