Passengers disembarking at Taronga Park Wharf

I suspect this pic was taken on 7th October, 1916, at the official opening of Taronga Park Zoo. The chap carrying the cane might be NSW Premier Bill Holman, who performed the official opening...but it's difficult to be certain at this resolution. The chap wearing the bowler hat might be Fred Flowers, President of the Legislative Council and Chairman of the Taronga Park Trust...or maybe Sydney Lord Mayor Dick Meagher, who was also at the official opening. I gather the official opening was a fairly low key affair due to the war. trove.nla.gov.au/work/235737724 - SLNSW pic of Bill Holman... trove.nla.gov.au/work/183008887 - NLA Fairfax pic of Fred Flowers... trove.nla.gov.au/work/185013418 - Dick Meagher appears in this NLA Fairfax pic...he's wearing a bowler hat... View of Sydney Harbour from Taronga Park Zoo (NSW)

Is there any possibility that this was taken in 1956? Not likely, I suspect, from the diminutive CBD. It is not unlikely that in that year I as a one-year-old enjoyed just this view. My family ventured to Sydney from central, very rural, Victoria (Lake Goldsmith) in that year and I had my first birthday at Taronga. With all the other creatures!!!

Thank heavens Taronga and all the Mosman headlands were left pretty much alone.

The view of Sydney CBD didn't change much for a long time, due to height limits. They didn't build another building higher than Culwula chambers for 50 years.

The elephant, Taronga Zoological Park

A truly historical image, even though as a child (1950s) I can recall visiting Taronga Zoo, and doing just that. Riding the elephant, seems so barbaric to consider such a ride now.

I did the same thing, but you're so right
