The photo was taken at the White House in Washington, D. C., in June, 1912, when Taft was the incumbent President. This was his second experience of the notification ritual. The committee had traveled from the Republican National Convention in Chicago, where Taft had been nominated for a second term. In the era before a candidate attended the convention in person, this was his ceremonial acceptance of the nomination. But of course, Taft went down to defeat in November. Woodrow Wilson, the Democratic candidate, was victorious, and Theodore Roosevelt, leader of the Bull Moose Party, came in second. In the Bain Company files at LOC is a photo of Taft's 1908 notification, in Cincinnati (his home town) -- but LOC has not yet posted that photo on Flickr.

The USS Sylph was the third Presidential Yacht. Purchased during the war with Spain for $50,000, the 123 foot vessel was commissioned at the Norfolk Navy Yard in August, 1898. McKinley was the first President to use the Sylph. President Roosevelt made frequent cruises on her to his summer place at Oyster Bay, New York, and President Taft used this vessel off the New England coast during the summers of his administration. @lifeasdaddy: is that the Aussie word? In the movie, "High Society," Bing Crosby and Grace Kelley used the term "yar."

Wystan, you have caused me to check. Now I think that my memory failed me and I should have written "yar". Yaw has no special or unusual meaning hereabouts. I'm fond of the movie High Society and have seen it more than 10 times. "yar" in a maritime context also appears in dialogue from The Philadelphia Story. Thanks!

Yes, "High Society" is a wonderful movie. In August, 1956, when I was 13, I sailed to Europe with my parents and little sister on a Dutch ship, the RMS Maasdam. The crossing took nine days. There wasn't much for a kid to do: no TV, but the ship did have a couple of new movies that they showed over and over -- "High Society," and Alec Guinness in "The Ladykillers." By voyage's end, I had memorized them both, and probably another that I don't remember now. Grace Kelley and I were in love, but she didn't know it. I don't recall that the Maasdam was particularly yar . . . .
