Boston ball grounds - 1912 (panorama #3), 9/28/12 (LOC)

It looks like there are six or seven rows of SEATS in front of the "Green Monster", which is hard to understand. They would have been ridiculously close to the action, dangerously so -- the wall is 304 feet from the plate. I also don't see the famous "Duffy's Cliff" rising up in front of it. I'm guessing that they took these seats out almost immediately, and the ground under them slopes up, and was left that way (until 1934). Fascinating picture. I've blogged it here: fnarf.blogspot.com/2008/04/boston-ball-grounds-1912-panor...

Amazing picture because of how old Fenway Park is and to think it still stands in the same place it did in 1912.

It was actually 324 feet in 1912, Yawkey added seats and pushed home plate out during the 1934 rebuild. The bleachers were temporarily added to Duffy's Cliff for the World Series. In some old pictures you can see fans sitting back on right and center field in a roped off area when they used to jam 'em in. Here is some good info on the history of the park: www.andrewclem.com/Baseball/FenwayPark.html
