    There was a school for deaconesses associated with the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. August 17, 1913, NYT query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9E03E1DB113BE633A... indicates that a home for the deaconesses in training had been recently completed and that a new Synod Hall would be essentially complete by September 1, for a convention of the Episcopal Church in October. The article has a picture that looks like the building at the right (as the Synod Hall). Perhaps they didn't get the landscaping addressed fully until the next spring. Looking at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cathedral_Saint_John_Divine_NY..., I would judge that the Synod Hall is in the lower right corner of the Cathedral campus, and that the deaconesses were walking towards the cathedral when this picture was taken.

    This photo caught my eye because it showed me how customs were back then and how funerals were held. Today we do the same thing, but in this day in age a lot of it seems pretentious. In this photo I see tradition and attention to detail for this fallen man and I also see how people respected the dead.

    If you go to the persistent URL and zoom the photo and scroll down, you can read the article. Apparently, they were overwhelmed (and a bit melodramatic about it) by the sheer size, scope and cost of the project. According to Wikipedia, it officially opened in 1941, but further construction was halted by WWII. A fire destroyed part of the church in 2001, and it's currently still being renovated: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_of_St._John_the_Divine
