USS Powhatan (ID # 3013), 1917-1919. Originally S.S. Hamburg (German Passenger Liner, 1899). Later named Red Cross, Hudson and President Fillmore USS Powhatan, a 18,026-ton troop transport, was originally the German passenger steamer Hamburg, which had been built in 1899 at Stettin, Germany. Caught at New York when World War I began in August 1914, she was soon chartered by the American Red Cross to take medical personnel and supplies to Europe. Renamed Red Cross, she left New York in mid-September and called at Falmouth, England; Paulliac, France; and Rotterdam, The Netherlands, before recrossing the Atlantic in October with American refugees on board. This appears likely to have been taken during the visit of three ships from the German fleet to the USA in early June, 1912. It has plate number 2729-5. Lieutenant Work appears in a photograph associated with that visit which has plate number 2729 - 12 here: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/3512136817/ and here is a New York Times article (thanks to Pixel Wrangler ) about the visit although Prince Christian is not mentioned : query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?_r=1&res=9C05E...

good detective "Work", that sure looks like Lt. Work.

No mention of "Lieutenant Work" either ;-) The sailor-prince is likely (German) Lieutenant Commander Christian Prinz von Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld [sic Hesse-Philippstadt-Barchfeld] [sic von Hessen-Phillips-thai-Barchfeld] (1887-1971). He visited Washington and New York aboard the Stettin, with the German Cruiser Squadron in June, 1912. –Compiled [1] [2] [3] [4]
