U.S. ironclad gunboat Essex (LOC)

USS Essex was originally constructed in 1856 at New Albany, Indiana as a steam-powered ferry named New Era. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Essex_(1856)

Unfortunately my eyesight precludes stereo view. But I do recall my Bro (RIP) telling me a ballistics story about these ironclad monitors. One side or the other invented such thick armour they were ball shot proof. However, the other side (from a fort at a higher elevation) poured so much shot on the thing (which couldn't move quickly) that the extra weight caused her to list and sink. I cannot find the references now though - who is good at detective work?
