American Red Cross Building – Then and Now (90+ years)

Several architectural and landscaping details were completed since the original photograph was taken. Red crosses were placed on the portico peak and above the main door, and granite baluster railings were added to the grounds. It's evident that trees do grow! ;-)   and the grounds now include numerous Cherry trees – that are gorgeous when blooming...   An interior view of the Assembly Room may be seen here.

Established in 1881 by Clara Barton, this 18¢ American Red Cross commemorative Social Awareness stamp was issued to mark the centennial of the American Red Cross and to recognize the services of volunteer workers. Thousands of selfless volunteers donate their time in six areas including domestic disaster relief, the collection of blood products, and educational programs.

First Day of Issue ceremonies were held at the American Red Cross Centennial Convention in Washington, DC, on May 1, 1981. (Scott 1910).

This is little Carla Wallenda (b.1936), a member of the famous “Flying Wallendas” family, at age 5. "By the age of 3, Carla shared top billing as the feature of a short subject movie with Lou Jacobs, Ringling Brother Circus feature clown, as Carla traversed the high silver strand as a bone-fide wire walker!" [1] Last year (2012), Carla performed her incredible death-defying aerial routine at every performance of the Space Coast State Fair in Brevard County. She's 76 years old. Lou Jacobs (Johann Ludwig Jacob) (1903-1992), was an Auguste Master Clown who performed for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for more than 60 years (1925-1985). In 1966, Jacobs' now-famous clown face was on a United States commemorative postage stamp. He was inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame in 1989. [2]
