Jane Addams was a social reformer, pacifist and women's rights activist who was most remembered as the founder of Hull House, one of the nation's first settlement houses which offered social, educational, and cultural opportunities to the large immigrant population of Chicago.

In 1931 she, together with Nicholas Murray Butler, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She was the first American woman to receive a Nobel Prize. In 1940 this 10¢ stamp was issued in the Famous Americans Series – Scientists, to honor and commemorate her.   First Day ceremonies were held in Chicago on April 26, 1940. (Scott 878).

A 15-cent postal card in the Historic Preservation Series, marking the centennial of Hull House, was issued by the U.S. Postal Service in September, 1989. First Day ceremonies were held on September 16, 1989, at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum—part of the College of Architecture and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2000 The US Postal Service honored Christy Mathewson with this commemorative stamp as part of the Classic Collections: Legends of Baseball issue. The Legends of Baseball issue honored 20 baseball greats who were named to the "All-Century Team," announced after the 1999 season. Votes from fans, as well as members of a special panel, selected the team.

"These players embody the glory and tradition of our national past-time. Tales of their extraordinary abilities and larger-than-life personalities have made them much more than just ballplayers: THEY ARE LEGENDS.

“In 1901, 21-year-old Christy Mathewson won 20 games for the New York Giants. With his ‘fade-away’ pitch, he posted three consecutive 30-victory seasons and in the 1905 World Series threw three shutouts in only six days.” – From the back of the sheet of stamps.

Jacqueline Cochran (1906-1980) – more Wikipedia

On March 9, 1996, the U.S. Postal Service issued a 50¢ stamp commemorating Jacqueline Cochran, the first woman to fly faster than the speed of sound. The stamp depicts Cochran after winning the 1938 Bendix Trophy air race from Los Angeles to Cleveland in just over 8 hours.
