American Red Cross Building – Then and Now (90+ years)

Several architectural and landscaping details were completed since the original photograph was taken. Red crosses were placed on the portico peak and above the main door, and granite baluster railings were added to the grounds. It's evident that trees do grow! ;-)   and the grounds now include numerous Cherry trees – that are gorgeous when blooming...   An interior view of the Assembly Room may be seen here.

Established in 1881 by Clara Barton, this 18¢ American Red Cross commemorative Social Awareness stamp was issued to mark the centennial of the American Red Cross and to recognize the services of volunteer workers. Thousands of selfless volunteers donate their time in six areas including domestic disaster relief, the collection of blood products, and educational programs.

First Day of Issue ceremonies were held at the American Red Cross Centennial Convention in Washington, DC, on May 1, 1981. (Scott 1910).

The beautiful Carmel Mission church has appeared on more than one US Postage stamp over the years. The US Postal Service issued a $18.95 Express Mail definitive stamp in February, 2012. The illustration features the dome-shaped bell tower and the elaborate star-shaped window of the Mission San Carlos Borroméo del Río Carmelo. (Scott 4650)

A 6¢ commemorative stamp "California Settlement" also featuring the bell tower of the Carmel Mission was issued by the Post Office Department in July, 1969. The stamp marked the 200th anniversary of the settlement of California as well as the bicentennial of the city of San Diego. (Scott 1373).

"Cross Creek: This site was the home of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, (1896–1953), the author of many major literary works, including The Yearling, which received the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, the novels South Moon Under, and Golden Apples, and her memoir, Cross Creek. She was elected to the National Academy of Arts and Letters."[1]

"In 1928, the Rawlingses purchased a 72 acre orange grove near Hawthorne, Florida, in a hamlet named Cross Creek for its location between Orange Lake and Lochloosa Lake. She brought the place to international fame through her writing. She was fascinated with the remote wilderness and the lives of Cross Creek residents, her Cracker neighbors (descendants of pioneer settlers), and felt a profound and transforming connection to the region and the land. Wary at first, the local residents soon warmed to her and opened up their lives and experiences to her. In 2008, the US Postal Service unveiled a
stamp bearing Rawlings' image, in her honor,
