In the time that The Hague was still beautiful. A lot has been destroyed in the 2nd WW, and the rest they destroyed in the last 20 years.

Actually you could probably take the same photo today and it would look largely the same. The city hall building and the church in the foreground on the left are still there and the pavement has been restored to something resembling what's in the picture, too.

iljitsch is right. And Moustache-Man also, but he's wrong with the causes of destruction. The most beautiful parts of theHague, my home town, has been destroyed between 1900 en 1930. And later, in the 60 and early 70's.

Yes - this spot is still very recognisable today. The Hague really hasn't come off lightly with destruction. Have to say that it is the stuff of the last 20 years that has been the ugliest ! ( Sorry city planners - but who thought that huge wind tunnel avenue in front of the station was a good idea ?? )

In my opinion, it was mainly the "stadsvernieuwing" ("city renewal") of the 1980s that produced very ugly results. Just look at the Schilderswijk. Starting with the 1990s newer buildings at least had some esthetics, although that doesn't necessarily make them beautiful. Although most of the canals are gone and The Hague doesn't have big stretches of really old stuff like Delft or even Amsterdam, there's still plenty of good stuff around, including some 19th / early 20th century neighborhoods, for instance: [http://www.flickr.com/photos/iljitsch/4135014469/sizes/s/]
