Antwerp Shipyards

    This is the port of Vlissingen, on Walcheren in the Netherlands. The ship in the distance is construction number 214, the later MS Willem Ruys that eventually became the MS Achille Lauro — en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Achille_Lauro The photo was likely taken in November 1944 (probably early that month), as Donald Carson was on Walcheren at that time.

    The original painting there is the "Lamentation over the Dead Christ" by Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). It was painted c.1635 for Saint Mary's Chapel in the "Recollects" convent of Antwerp. Original now at Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. Maybe the Mother Provincial took the photo herself on her travels and commissioned a copy?

    not much help dating this one, 50 yr range for the photo, several hundred for the painting. This is in a convent today?

    Not Cologne: the cathedral there is next to the railway station and near a river. This feels vaguely like Brussels, but that's really only a guess.

    Paul Mison Not Brussels, I think. In modern photos of St. Gudula Cathedral, and from what I see on the Wikipedia page, it has symmetrical towers, and a vaulted window over the front-middle section. This cathedral has a tall column & a short one — possibly due to war damage, but it still looks different than St. Gudula — and there seems to be a round rose window.

    The Cathedral of Our Lady seems to be a match — taller tower on the front-left, partiallly-round rose window at the front-middle. And the surrounding buildings look similar.




    I'm not totally convinced yet, but it's the closest match I've been able to come up with.
