    This was the jazz band that, as a result of Union objections, was sent packing back to the USA. The incident took place in Melbourne, with the band being accused of mixed race sexual relations and drug use. As depicted in Series 1 Episode 3 of The Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries, the ‘charges’ were trumped-up by the Union over fears for the job security of Australian musicians. Sonny Clay played ‘hot’ jazz, a style foreign to Australian musicians but much appreciated by audiences. After the tour, a ban was placed on visiting black musicians which stayed in place, with some ad-hoc exemptions for visiting black servicemen during WW11, until the first of the Lee Gordon Big Shows in 1954. The great Ella Fitzgerald co-starred on this show with Jerry Colonna, Artie Shaw and Buddy Rich.
