I'm going to be talking about how Flickr relates to archives access in a few weeks - do you think putting this image on Flickr has helped laypeople find this image and use it for their needs, or has it just driven more users to ask for the actual photograph in the National Archives? Thanks.

Hi photosharp, Thanks including the National Archives in your presentation. So far, anecdotally, we have not seen an increase in requests for reproductions of photographs since we joined the Flickr community. It seems that making photos available on Flickr has allowed the public and researchers to find images like this one of Nixon and Elvis and use them for their needs. Interestingly, althought Nixon and Elvis is the most requested photo at the National Archives, it is not the most viewed on our Flickr photostream. This photo of two women at U.S. Steel in oxygen masks has gotten almost three times as many views (3,064 compared to 1,087 views): www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/3660777810/. Is there any way to find out about Employee lists for around that time? The second lady looks like my grandmother.

Shelly Whitby Shelly Whitby. The only information I could find in our catalogue was that this photograph was from the 32259 Photographic negatives of early Brisbane businesses collection. Unfortunately, I could not find any more information on the G.E. Adams, Rich Cake Specialist shop. In 1927, G.E. Adams, a cake manufacturer, acquired the titles for two lots (just over 61 perches) in Costin Street for the purposes of building a modern factory and offices. Two houses on the site were removed and an application for the construction of the factory approved by the Greater Brisbane City Council in 1926. The estimated cost of the building was £6 000 and the builders were A. Stonadge and Son. Sidney W. Prior designed the one storey brick building for Adams. The new factory in Costin Street was claimed to be “the most up-to-date and hygienic factory of its kind in Queensland” with electric revolving ovens, modern machinery and a modern freezing plant for the storage of ingredients. The factory produced 14 tons of cake each week. Within two years, the building had been extended and improvements added. Wow I love it. July 1936 is the calendar date. Just month before my mom and dad met.

Packaged and loose goods are stacked on shelves and the floor. Items visible on the walls include a calendar showing "July 1936" and a Coca-Cola advertisement. Visible items for sale include loose dishes, lanterns, dustpans, rope, padlocks, boxed soaps, boxes of shot-gun shells, Mason jars, canned goods, bags of self-rising flour. Rolls of butcher-paper visible at left. A safe is at center, partially behind bags of flour.

And don't forget the shotgun shells. There are boxes and boxes of them.

Amazing. Coca Cola is still branded the same way..totally recognizable in 2009.

I'd love to have a couple of those lanterns.
