Quilt of State birds?

She probably bought the blocks with the designs already stamped on them. Such kits were popular, even through the 1960s. I have a State Flowers quilt my grandmother made from a kit.

Nice bed quilt. I like the way the green and red sashing meets in a chequered arrangement between each block. Clearly not this lady's first quilt. Pity the sunlight is so bright that it obscures the detail of the bird blocks. Wonder if her family still has it?'Tis very possible.

I bet the women in fancy hats and dressed in black are there to show support for the 'common' women who are doing all the work. Not sure I worded that right but it does seem like an odd picture to me. I also wonder where that particular Berlin is.

The New York Times on December 17, 1914, reports but one story of many of relief work efforts carried out on both sides of the Atlantic. "A hearty reception awaits the American Christmas expedition which will reach Berlin tomorrow from the Christmas ship Jason. "The American Kitchen will make gifts to 200 women and 200 children, ... fifty babies are being cared for in the Infants' Home, while other organizations of American women have been busily engaged in sewing for the past two months, preparing gifts for children." Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Vintage Quilts, and we'd love to have your photo added to the group.

Wonderful shot, I am a native New Mexican and this is great to see. I can relate to how still one had to stand to get a shot back then, while looking into our bright sunshine with no shades.

After her work on the farm was done, she then had to do her chores in the house and get the children ready for bed.Quilts like these were usually made in the few remaining hours before bedtime and on a sunday(day of rest?). So this probably took a couple of years to complete.(speaking as a quiltmaker who also has to fit sewing into a busy day).If she had a machine, it may have taken less,but it's quite an accomplishment -and she's obviously very proud of it.
