A stunning photo! -- made me 'wanna drive out there. Then, I read (with apologies to Paul Harvey) 'The Rest of the Story' ;) Stormy history of Florida's Pigeon Key Tours of the isolated island include an overview of the 1935 hurricane that turned Pigeon Key into a ghost town and killed 423 people, many of them WWI vets.

Pixel Wrangler Tragically, Pigeon Key sat right in the path of one of the strongest hurricanes in recorded history. Here is an aerial shot of the rescue train that failed to reach the vets on Labor Day 1935: www.floridamemory.com/items/show/149572.

Florida Memory Thanks for that photo. What a sad, sad story. I didn't know about the huge loss-of-life and intensity of that hurricane.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Mile_Bridge "There are two bridges in this location. The older bridge, originally known as the Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel-Pacet Channel Bridge, was constructed from 1909-1912 under the direction of Henry Flagler as part of the Florida East Coast Railway's Key West Extension, also known as the Overseas Railroad."
