    observerstation I understood it to mean that he forced a door with say a shoulder or boot, rather than smashing a window.

    Great news that a relative has made contact who may be able to provide more details about this man's life. Life is not kind to many and it's good to try to understand why people make the choices they do. Often poverty reduces those choices and it's only with the distance of time that we can relfect with empathy - and hopefully learn from history.
