The 14 men are identified (with some variations from the Tribune story) in the New York Times for February 24, 1919. Jose Grau, 25, editor of the radical Spanish language newspaper "El Corsario" and uses the pen name of "Arnaldo Sapelana". Jose (or Joseph) Roman (or Ramon) Fernandez, 21, laborer. Jose M. Alicer, 22, cigarmaker. Raphael Acosta, 24, cigarmaker. Joseph Micezer, 20, clerk Alemanero Malcono, twenty years old, pantryman. Celestino Granado (or Granada), 22, cigarmaker Ramon Sanchez, 23, cigarmaker Rogelio Garcia, 26, cigarmaker Theodore (or Pedro) Martin,29, associate editor and business manager of "El Corsario," Elario Orestissa, 39, machinist. There is this note about Jose Grau from the Emma Goldman Papers editor: "aliases Arnoldo Sapelano and Arnold Sopelno. Spanish Anarchist and IWW member. Grau was an organizer of the Spanish branch of the IWW and entered the country in June 1917 from Progresso, Mexico aboard a Norwegian steamship, the Wyking. In May 1918 Grau attended an IWW convention in Philadelphia held by the Marine Transport Workers. On 23 February 1919 Grau was arrested along with thirteen other Spanish anarchists as part of an alleged attempt by Grupo pro Prensa (literally, "Group for the Press"; Press Advocacy Group) to assassinate President Wilson. Grau and his comrades were soon released with the help of Harry Weinberger, but Grau was subsequently scheduled for deportation. Recht defended him at his hearing. The Norwich bulletin., September 25, 1919, p. 1, col. 5, "COUNSEL FOR GRAU DENIES CLIENT IS A SPANISH I. W. W.", confirms that Jose Grau was merely alleged by the immigration authorities to have entered the United States secretly in order to attend a convention of the I.W.W. in Philadelphia.
