Why confiscated?

Was it due to petrol rationing .... or to be used in the case of invasion? According to Wikipedia [some] "pleasure launches converted to channel patrol boats (and armed with depth charges)"

The reason given by my father who is nearly 94 is that the boats were confiscated to prevent the enemy from using them in the event of invasion. The boats were returned to their owners after World War !!. Our boat was kept at Carramar.

Every time I smell old wooden rowing boats, and sense the rocking motion as you step into a boat on still water, it takes me back to days rowing on these waters and a holiday spent in the hotel I seem to remember we stayed in here in the 50's..
