There is a reverse (aft?, stern?) view of the 'Royal Art[hur]', unidentified. Is it Sutherland Dock on Cockatoo Island? Should be relatively easy to get a date via Trove.

Its definitely Sutherland Dock as is the one from beachcomberaustralia and well before WWI from the lack of buildings to the left of the ship.

I think it is Sutherland Dock on Cockatoo Island. See Don Shearman's 1914 photo - Not sure about the date ...

It's definitely Sutherland Dock. The barrel roofed building at the middle left of the dock appears to be the same as the one just visible in he 1914 photo but the three story building behind it is not present in the 1914 photo or any of the others from that period making me think that it is some time later than this.

Don Shearman beachcomber australia We have had some new information come in about this image - and you are indeed correct it is Sutherland Dock, 1919.

Tentative identification shows this as a gunboat or torpedo gunboat of the 1890s. There is one gun on the foredeck and traces of a gun embrasure or casemate on the forward hull below the foc's'le. These points suggest this is either HMS Whiting or HMS Wizard. The names were changed in 1890 to Boomerang and Karakatta. Both vessels were launched in 1889 and survived until sold out of service in 1905. The Victorian livery again suggests pre 1902/1903. The deck gun would be a 4.7-inch, one of two carried by these ships plus there were 5 x 14-inch torpedo tubes and four x 3-pounders. A 3-pounder would be mounted in the foc's'l casemate or embrasure.
