from 1911 Festival of Empire in London. The Crystal Palace is visible in the background and burned down in 1936.

You will find here another photo on the same subject matter: www.hood.de/auction/29186434/crystal-palace-festival-of-e... In fact, they both seem pretty plainly to be part of the one set of postcards. Here is yet a further postcard that "shows the model buildings erected for the Festival of Empire in the grounds south of the Palace, with the ornamental fountain in the centre.": www.ideal-homes.org.uk/lambeth/crystal-palace/festival-of...

Thanks for the comments and for finding the typo. We'll take care of it.

The Crystal Palace was moved to Sydenham before it burned down. My mother who lived in Norwood could remember it burning down, she was 11 at the time. She saw the reflection of the flames in the windows of her home and thought that was on fire, but the flames were behind her on Sydenham Hill. you can still see the outline of the building here ... maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Sydenham+Hill,...

City, telephone room

Wow, this photo is amazing! Just think where we have gone in telecommunications! Now, just about everybody carries a tiny cell phone around with them in their pocket. Imagine if these people saw what today's cell phones looked like. They probably wouldn't believe they were actual phones.
