Fishing in Ross River, near Townsville, ca. 1884

In the heart of Townsville fishing on the Ross River can be great fun with access for land-based and boating fishermen easy. The Ross River is a tidal estuary with around 4m of tidal movement, fresh water upstream blocked by the Aplin Weir. Ross River holds the famous Barramundi with the warmer months the best time to target them. The Ross River also provides direct access to Magnetic Island, the west and south points hold Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, Grunter, Golden Snapper, Trevally, Queen Fish, Tripletail, and Nannygai. Large Barramundi is often caught on the south side of Magnetic Island on the reef flats with crayfish as bait. The Ross River provides access to some great land-based fishing locations. At the mouth of the river are several rock walls and jetties well worth using live baits for Barramundi? It is also possible to walk the length of the rock wall casting lures for all sorts of fish. Several bridges in town are also great places to flick lures or drop some bait down. Further upstream is Black Weir, Gleesons Weir, and Aplin Weir, the Aplin Weir separates the fresh from the saltwater. If and when there is enough water to breach the fresh into salt the fishing can be red hot for land-based fishermen in Townsville. Source: www.fishingspots.com.au/s/ross-river/
