Maybe it was an early multicultural pageant, and she was La Befana? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Befana

pennylrichardsca (now at ipernity) Ooooh! Should have remembered! Spent Christmas in Rome a couple of years ago, and was astounded at all the witches on sale on street stalls alongside cribs, etc.

'The Mikado'....but what else? On the grounds of probability I'd say you're correct. Notice the 'three minstrels' with their mandolins(?) at the back, a prominent feature of the opera. The Mikado has always been an exceptionally popular opera for school performances.

Definitely the Mikado and what a stunning photo? This is such a beauty, thank you for putting it up. I have it on CD and frequently listen to it when driving. It was one of the first light opera's I was taken to and the memory is still as bright as it was on the night.

3 of my mother's sisters are in this photo, but she herself wasn't old enough. My mother (Chriss French), who is 93, pointed out her sisters, Moira, Marjorie and Nora, as well as four other girls and they are marked on this copy of the photo on Dropbox : www.dropbox.com/s/08dkdxh7eacwkul/Holy%20Faith%20Rosberco...
