Lavinia "Vinnie" Ream Hoxie (1847-1914) was a sculptor, first woman to win a commission from the US Government to create a statue (of Lincoln, after his assassination): she also sculpted portraits of Admiral Farragut and Sequoyah. Apparently the Bain News Service circulated this photo of Ream-Hoxie to its clients at the time of her death -- January 12, 1914. She is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. And the town of Vinita, Oklahoma, was named in her honor (although she was a Wisconsin native).

She's quite an interesting historical figure. Henriette Caillaux was a murderer, and the wife of the Finance Minister of France. Her husband's reputation was sullied by the editor of Le Figaro, who had printed the private correspondence of the minister, parts of which suggested improprieties while in office. In defense of her husband, Mme. Caillaux went to the editor's office, pulled out a pistol, and shot him three times in the chest, killing him instantly. Her trial was big news in the year 1914. Bucknam Pasha or Pacha (1869-1915) was a Canadian-born American citizen, Ransford Dodsworth Bucknam, who served as a Rear Admiral in the Turkish Navy. He was working as an officer at a shipbuilding company in Philadelphia; he delivered a war ship to Constantinople, and became a favorite of the Sultan's.
