Fueling a plane at the Naval Air Base, Corpus Christi, Texas (LOC)

  • Jim Howard said:
I think they are adding oil, rather than fuel.

JimNtexas: Can you say a little more about why you think it's oil rather than fuel? Is it because of where they are on the plane? The type of hose he's using? Or...? Thanks!
  • Jim Howard said:
Barbara, those big radial engines would hold up to fifty gallons of oil, and they used a lot of oil every hour of operation. It'd be tire some to fill it a quart at time. These motors were 'dry sump', with a separate oil tank usually located behind the engine itself. That would not be a good place for a fuel cap, because it's so close to the very hot engine.

    Thanks for the information--very helpful!
