This is a rare (?) view of the First Sydney Station Terminus (1855) as described here - www.cityrail.info/about/history/central_station_in-depth .

And a glimpse of Sydney's first horse-drawn tramway, from the station along Pitt Street to Circular Quay, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trams_in_Sydney#Early_tramways ..

beachcomber australia Thanks for adding these background info links.

Also shows the early telegraph wires and a pole on the backbone route from the GPO to Parramatta.

" The backbone of the public telegraph network was a route in George Street from the telegraph office to Redfern Station and a shared route along the railway line to Parramatta. By 1880 there were about 10 wires along George Street. This pole route appears from the General Post Office c.1890 on Arthur Streeton's 1893 painting of Redfern Station. From Redfern to Parramatta there were about 20 wires, and crossarms were used. "

Thank you beachcomberaustralia for adding the city rail, link. Marvellous photos of which I'd never seen previous to this! Good of you to do that!

Recently came across another photo of this first Sydney Station. Titled "The Great Southern Railway Station, Sydney" from an album by William Blackwood dated 1858 -

Newtown? - SMH 21/12/1903 p.10, Col. 4 (under "G") - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/14588158 " G.W. HORSLER, Hat, Block, and Frame Maker, Modeller and Shape Designer, .... .... .. 1 Whately-street and 54 Wilson-street, Newtown, Syd. " The two addresses back on to each other and now a vacant block or, um, parklet - Google Street View - maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geo... I have a hunch this image is in one of the Plague Albums (1900) - unfortunately the SLNSW website is undergoing maintenance. Maybe the Newtown address is where Mr Horsler moved to, as the ad is 1903?

A search for "Horsler" in the Index to Unassisted Inward Passenger Lists to Victoria 1852-1923 - 210.8.122.120/indexes/index_search.asp?searchid=23 - at the Public Records of Victoria, yields the following - Family Name HORSLER First Name G W MR Age 35 Month NOV Year 1901 Ship OMRAH Port B Fiche 677 Page 006 Of course he may not be the same G. W. Horsler, but I reckon it's highly likely he is - which would mean he wasn't in Sydney at the time of the Plague.

The plot thickens - same houses rear view -
