Also shows the early telegraph wires and a pole on the backbone route from the GPO to Parramatta.

" The backbone of the public telegraph network was a route in George Street from the telegraph office to Redfern Station and a shared route along the railway line to Parramatta. By 1880 there were about 10 wires along George Street. This pole route appears from the General Post Office c.1890 on Arthur Streeton's 1893 painting of Redfern Station. From Redfern to Parramatta there were about 20 wires, and crossarms were used. "

Title needs amending to Australian Eleven Hotel. It was on Elizabeth Street at the NE corner with Kettle Street, across the street from Redfern Park. See www.flickr.com/photos/state-records-nsw/6662642331/sizes/o/ Grid 10D - it was still there in 1928, so this is not a demolition photo. Mrs Laura Creamer was landlady in the late 1880s - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/28355508 - and from the crossed-out sign, it looks like she had recently been replaced. I am not sure how to look up licencees, bu the date must be c.1890 like several of these 4481 photos with vignetting at the corners. I wonder what the story behind this photo is?

At the Licensing Court on Tuesday 7th January 1890, the license for the Australian Eleven Hotel was transferred from John Lewis Kettle to Edwin Berry. - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13755547

Here we go - the license was previously transferred from Laura Creamer to John Kettle at the Licensing Court session of Tuesday 22nd March 1887. - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13629948
